Background: Twenty six persons were killed and 55 injured - 26 of them seriously - when the up Kirti Express derailed near Chamraj Station, about 60 miles from Bajkot, at 1.20 this morning.
The Kirti Express was on the Porbunder-Mehsana run via Rajkot. The engine and three coaches immediately behind it were derailed and the next five coaches capsized.
The medical staff of the Rajkot division was rushed to the scene of the accident. The injured were given first aid and removed to surendranagar Hospital, about seven miles from the spot. The Army authorities in Jamnagar, rushed medical assistance in. They assisted the civil authorities in treating some victims of the accident.
According to officials here, rescue parties had so far extricated 25 bodies from the wreckage. Rescue operations were still in progress. The railway office here was besieged by anxious people inquiring about relatives and friends.
As a result of the accident the service between Veraval and Mehsuna on the Rajkot Division was completely disorganised. It was later restored with the laying of a diversion track at the site of the accident.
Many of the bodies were taken to a mass burial organised by the local people of Surendernagar.
