  • Description

AN ATTEMPT TO TAP OIL THAT IS THOUGHT TO LIE UNDER THE NORTH SEA IS BEING MADE BY DUTCH ENGINEERS OFF THE COAST OF HOLLAND. IN THE EARLY HOURS OF AUG 28, A FLOATING OIL DRILLING PLATFORM WAS TOWED INTO A POSITION 2 1/2-MILES OFF THE SOUTH COAST INSIDE DUTCH TERRITORIAL WATERS.

BUILT AT WALLSEND-ON-TYNE IN ENGLAND AT A COST OF HALF-A-MILLION-POUNDS, THE DRILLING PLATFORM, CALLED TRITON, WILL PROBE TO A DEPTH OF 6,500-FEET. SIX HEAVY ANCHORS WILL KEEP IT IN PLACE UNTIL THE FOUR LEGS HAVE BEEN FIRMLY PLANTED IN THE SEA-BED. THE LEGS ARE 170 FT LONG AND 8 FT IN DIAMETER. THEY ARE PUSHED DOWN AND PLANTED FIRMLY INTO THE SEA-BED UNTIL THE TOWER IS LIFTED ABOVE THE SURFACE.

ALL THE MACHINERY FOR DRILLING OPERATIONS SHOULD BE SET UP WITHIN A FEW DAYS BY THE 38 MAN CREW. WHEN THIS IS COMPLETED, THE FIRST PROBE WILL SINK INTO THE BED. SEISMIC SURVEYS HAVE SHOWN THE RIGHT TYPE OF GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS UNDER THE SURFACE. DUTCH EXPERTS THINK THAT THEIR NORTH SEA PONTOON SITE MAY BE OVER AN EXTENSION OF THE OIL FIELDS NEAR THE HAGUE AND ROTTERDAM.

EVEN IF THE ENGINEERS STRIKE OIL THERE WILL HAVE TO BE LARGE DEPOSITS TO MAKE THE RECOVERY A COMMERCIAL PROPOSITION. HOLLAND ALREADY PRODUCES ALMOST TWO-MILLION TONS OF OIL EACH YEAR.
