Mr. Harold Wilson, the British Prime Minister, received Mr. Michael Somare, the Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea, at number 10 Downing Street on Wednesday (15 October).
Mr. Somare was on his way home after visiting the United States where he signed two financial treaties, met the Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger and witnessed his country's admission to the United Nations.
While in London, he took the opportunity to discuss with Mr. Wilson. Some of the developments which have taken place in his country since it gained its independence one month ago.
Prior to its independence, Papua New Guinea was administered by Australia on behalf of the United Nations as a trust territory.
Its independence came in the midst of a secessionist move by Bougainville, a copper-rich island forming part of the territory of Papua New Guinea.
