    THE SECURITY COUNCIL OF THE UNITED NATIONS HAS AGREED TO MAINTAIN A 4,500 MAN PEACE-KEEPING FORCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST FOR A FURTHER SIX MONTHS.

    THE FORCE WAS ONE YEAR OLD ON THURSDAY, (24 OCTOBER), WHEN THE COUNCIL MADE ITS DECISION.

    THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA AND IRAQ WERE THE ONLY TWO COUNTRIES WHICH DID NOT SUPPORT THE DECISION AND ABSTAINED FROM VOTING.

    QUESTIONS RAISED BY THE SOVIET UNION ABOUT THE COST OF THE FORCE -- KNOWN A UNEF -- AND ITS FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT WERE RESOLVED DURING INTENSIVE PRIVATE CONSULTATIONS.

    THE AMBASSADOR FROM THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA, HUANG HUA, SAID HIS GOVERNMENT -- WHICH DISAGREES WITH THE PRINCIPLE OF U.N.PEACE-KEEPING FORCES -- WOULD NOT PAY ITS SHARE OF THE UPKEEP OF UNEF.
