  • Description

A mess demonstration made its way through the streets of Aden, capital of the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, on Wednesday (Jan.9) to protest against the alleged presence of Iranian troops in support of the Omani ruler Sultan Qabus Bin Said.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Oman and the Arabian Gulf, which has been fighting a guerrilla war against Omani Government forces in Dhofar since 1965, claim that Iran has sent up to 3,000 troops, together with land and sea support, into Dhofar - the southern province of the Sultanate of Oman. They say that the Iranian military campaign began on December 20th and claim that between then and December 29th, 129 of them were killed and two helicopters shot down.

The Iran Embassy in London told Visnews on Friday (January 11), there were no Iranian forces in Oman. "This is an absolutely baseless rumour - an utter fabrication. There are no Iranian troops in Oman. There are only a few helicopter crews engaged in relief work", said an embassy spokesman.

The Shah of Iran has said on several occasions that Iran will not tolerate "subversion" on the Arab side of Gulf. And in BBC interview last year he denounced as "savages" those who threatened the existing system in the Omani Sultanate.

The Omani Government has confirmed that on December 19 it began a campaign to open the road to salalah, the capital of Dhofar, which has been cut by guerrilla action since 1969.

Wednesday's demonstration in Aden culminated in a meeting in front of the headquarters of the Yemenite Labour Union. There were speeches by representatives of the Front For the Liberation of Oman and the Arabian Gulf.
