    SOME 8,000 SHIPYARD WORKERS DEMONSTRATED IN ST. NAZAIRE LAST NIGHT (THURSDAY) AGAINST THE DISMISSAL OF 246 OF THEIR FELLOW WORKERS. LATER THEY CLASHED WITH POLICE SECURITY FORCES AND TEAR-GAS WAS USED TO BREAK UP THE DEMONSTRATION.

    THE INCIDENT BEGAN IN THE AFTERNOON WHEN A DELEGATION OF THE SHIPYARD WORKERS' TRADE UNION WERE DUE TO SEE MONSIEUR COTTEZ, THE DEPUTY-PREFECT OF ST. NAZAIRE, AND PRESENT THEIR GRIEVANCES. BUT THEY DECLINED TO ATTEND THE MEETING BECAUSE OF SECURITY FORCES SURROUNDING M. COTTEZ's OFFICE.

    A PROTEST MEETING WAS HELD AND THEN THE DEMONSTRATORS MASSED TO MARCH IN A BODY TO THE SUB-PREFECTURE. AS THEY APPROACHED, POLICE REINFORCEMENTS WERE CALLED AND FIGHTING FOLLOWED.

    THE DEMONSTRATORS THREW STONES AND THEN POLICE REPLIED WITH TEAR-GAS. ONE OF THE WORKMEN WAS SO BADLY INJURED THAT HE HAD TO HAVE HIS RIGHT HAND AMPUTATED.

    THE FIGHTING LASTED FOR AN HOUR BEFORE THE DEMONSTRATORS BROKE UP AND RETURNED TO THEIR HOMES.
