  • Description

A coach drawn by four high-stepping horses arrived at the Yugoslavian-Austrian border near Spielfeld on April 20. The driver and attendants were dressed in livery of 400 years ago. From the coach stepped a dignified gentleman dressed in beautiful robes of the same period. He represented Ambassador the Marquis Rogier Ghislain de Busbecq travelling the same route as that taken by the original Ambassador when in 1560 he brought back from Turkey the first Tulip bulbs to be grown in Western Europe.

The coach, with a selection of Turkish tulip bulbs aboard, left Istanbul, Turkey, on Mar 30 for a 36-day journey through Greece, Yugoslavia, Austria and Germany before reaching Rotterdam, Holland, in time for the Dutch Tulip Day festival on May 5.

Passing through the two national customs barriers, the coach continued on its way to Graz, then to Salzburg; Munich; Leyden and finally Rotterdam.
