Background: On the Paul Ricard motor racing circuit in the South of France, manager Frank Williams with his Saudi-Arabian backers have been preparing for the new Grand Prix season. Racing drivers Clay Regazzoni and Alan Jones piloted the brand new Saudi-Williams cars.
SYNOPSIS: The cars were built at the William's Engineering factory at Didcot, in England. Frank Williams for the first time in Formula One racing lured Arab cash into the sport last year.
He has recruited Swiss-born driver Clay Regazzoni for next season. The cars were designed by Patrick Head, a former Lola engineer. He has improved last season's design, but is still using a Ford engine. Also in the Saudi-Williams team is Alan Jones, possibly the best driver from Australia since Jack Brabham.
Jones snapped up a surprise victory at the Austrian Grand Prix in August 1977, where he beat Niki Lauda on the Austrian's home track.
Clay Regazzoni has driven in over 100 Grand Prix races, of which he has won four.
There is a shortage of Formula One drivers, and the Saudi-Williams' team did well to sign up former Ferrari driver Regazzoni. The veteran is expected to bring solid experience to the still young team, who were slow to reach form last season.
