    The Central Committee of the Arab Socialist Union -- Egypt's sole political party -- met in Cairo on Saturday (5 August) to discuss the steps towards full unity with Libya.

    President Anwar Sadat has returned to Cairo and is resting after his historic agreement with Libya's leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to merge the two neighbouring states into one enormous nation.

    Sayed Marei, First Secretary of the policy-making Central Committee, president at Saturday's meeting of the A.S.U. committee members. The union agreement listed three main steps that must be taken towards full unity: Formation of a unified political leadership, laying down by that leadership of the foundations for unity, and the formation of various political, defence and economic committees to implement the merger arrangements.

    There will be public referendums on the proposed union in both countries before the merger deadline of September 1, 1973.
