  • Description

English football club Liverpool won the European Football Union (UEFA) Cup when they drew 1-1 with the Belgian team Bruges in the second leg of the final in Bruges, on Wednesday night (19 May).

Liverpool, who won the first leg match 3-2 at Liverpool, won the cup with a 4-3 aggregate over the two matches.

But Bruges scored first in this game when Raoul Lambert took a goal from a penalty after only 11 minutes of play.

Four minutes later the wildly cheering Belgians in the 32,000 capacity crowd and the Olympia Stadium fell silent when Liverpool's Kevin Keegan accepted a pass from captain Emlyn Hughes and placed a low shot past Bruges' Danish goalkeeper Birger Jensen.

After half time, Bruges, desperate to score at least one more goal, attacked strongly, particularly in the last 15 minutes.

But the Liverpool defence held firm and the Belgians failed to break the tied score.

It was Liverpool's second UEFA Cup win in four years. The team was unbeaten in this year's competition, with nine wins and three draws.
