  • Description

CZECH STUDENTS STARTED A THREE-DAY SIT-IN PROTEST YESTERDAY (MONDAY) TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT FOR MR. ALEXANDER DUBCEK, THE COMMUNIST PARTY LEADER. MR. DUBCEK'S POWERS HAVE BEEN CURBED SINCE THE MEETING OF THE PARTY'S CENTRAL COMMITTEE LAST WEEK-END. AMONG THE BUILDINGS OCCUPIED BY THE STUDENTS IN PRAGUE ARE THE FACULTIES OF PHILOSOPHY AND LAW, AS WELL AS ENGINEERING SCHOOL.

THE SIT-IN IS PLANNED TO LAST UNTIL WEDNESDAY EVENING. NO SPECIAL POLICE PRECAUTIONS HAVE BEEN TAKEN SO FAR. A 10-POINT RESOLUTION NAILED ON THE DOOR OF THE LAW AND PHILOSOPHY FACULTIES CALLED FOR THE CONTINUATION OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY'S REFORMING ACTION PROGRAMME PASSED LAST SPRING. THE RESOLUTION DEMANDED FREEDOM OF SPEECH, ASSEMBLY AND TRAVEL. IT SAID THAT POLITICIANS WHO DID NOT ENJOY THE SUPPORT OF THE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HOLD OFFICE.

THE COMMUNIST PARTY'S CENTRAL COMMITTEE DECIDED AT ITS WEEK-END MEETING TO FORM A NEW EXECUTIVE OF EIGHT MEMBERS. STUDENTS SAY THAT MANY, OF WHAT THEY CALL PROGRESSIVE ELEMENTS, HAVE BEEN ELIMINATED FROM THE NEW EXECUTIVE.

PARTY LEADERS HAVE APPEALED TO STUDENTS TO END THEIR STRIKE WHICH HAS SPREAD TO SCHOOLS. ABOUT 60,000 STUDENTS ARE INVOLVED IN THE PROTESTS IN SEVERAL TOWNS. THEY HAVE RECEIVED MESSAGES OF SUPPORT FROM GROUPS OF WORKERS, JOURNALISTS, AND ARTISTS.
