    THE TAKE-OVER CAME A DAY AFTER THE NEUTRALIST 63-YEAR-OLD PRINCE HAD ANNOUNCED HE WOULD RESIGN BECAUSE THE COUNTRY'S THREE RIVAL FACTIONS HAD FAILED TO RESOLVE THEIR DIFFERENCES.

    FROM WASHINGTON A U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT SPOKESMAN SAID THE UNITED STATES WAS "CATEGORICALLY OPPOSED" TO A SEIZURE OF POWER IN LAOS. IN LONDON, A FOREIGN OFFICE STATEMENT SAID BRITAIN WAS "DISTURBED" BY THE COUP D'ETAT.
