  • Description

A policemen's lot was never a particularly happy one, and these days increasing crime and violence are contriving to make it even worse. Accordingly, police everywhere are becoming more militant in their demands for better conditions and the latest to take up the issue were italian police.

SYNOPSIS: Five thousand of the country's police gathered at Rome's Palazzo Dello Sport on Sunday (2 October) to discuss the formation of their own trade union. Crime has been called "Italy's largest growth industry" and the police have become increasingly concerned at the hazards of their work.

The injury and mortality rates are high in the Italian police force, and even at the time of this meeting the colleagues of these men were caught between violent extremist clashes in many parts of the country. The police believe they need a union to help better their working conditions, and union leader Mr. Mario Spandaro, outlined the action that would be necessary to form one.

Whether or not the Italian police decide on a union, those at the meeting seemed enthusiastic.
