  • Description

Troops and civilian refugees from areas as close as 12 miles (20 kilometres) to the Khmer capital, Phnom Penh, are streaming into the city as about 40 encircling Communist battalions continue their vance.

The Communists are setting up rocket batteries within range of the city, following a series of successful attacks on Government positions on Thursday (12 April).

On Sunday (15 April), five ships beat the Communist blockade on the Mekong River and crossed into the Khmer Republic with desperately-needed supplies of fuel and rice for the beleaguered city. The tankers were due to arrive in the capital the same day. A sixth vessel -- an ammunition barge -- was destroyed by Communist rockets just inside the South Vietnamese border.

This film, of troops falling back on Phnom Penh and civilians seeking safety in the city, was filmed only two miles (3 1/2 kilometres) from one Phnom Penh's outer suburbs.

Retreating Khmer troops are among the refugees streaming into the city. About 40 Communist battalions are encircling Phnom Penh, which is depending on ships dodging Communist gunfire along the Mekong River to replenish its dwindling food and fuel supplies.

These retreating troops were only two miles from Phnom Penh's outer suburbs. Five supply ships were due to arrive in the city from South Vietnam on Sunday. A sixth vessel was destroyed by Communist rookete.
