  • Description

The Ivory Coast's Environment Week was launched in Abidjan on Wednesday (5 June) with the opening of an Environmental Exhibition.

The main topics -- illustrated by exhibits and photographs -- were the pollution of lagoon waters near Abidjan, the nation's capital, the importance of forest areas, legislation on water supply and the protection of the shore-line from oil-tanker effluent.

The exhibition was opened by the Minister for Tourism, M. Mathieu Ekra -- acting in place of President Felix Houphouet-Boigny, who was visiting the Gabonese Republic.

The formation of the country's Town Environmental Commission followed the United Nations conference on the environment in Stockholm last year. The Planning Minister, Mr. Mohamed Diawara, decided that the Ivory Coast's natural resources needed to be protected.
