TRANSCRIPT: RIAD: SEQ 2 & 3: "It's one of the strongest resolutions supporting the Arab cause. They are condemning the Israelis' aggression against the Arab countries, condemning them for their continuing occupation of the Arab territories, refusing to recognise the national rights of the Palestinians, condemning them for their continuing attacks against refugee camps in Lebanon. Even condemning the countries who are giving the Israelis any military support or any aid. And describing Israel as an advanced base for colonialism and racism. And they promised to give their full support by all means to the Arabs and to the Palestinians in order to free their territories and restore their rights. On the question of depriving Israel from its membership, it is there in the resolution. It is only ... the Arabs, they never said they are really going to insist to raise the question in the coming General Assembly. What they are looking for is that Israel should respect the United Nations resolution, that's the main question."

Background: Arab League Secretary General Mahmoud Raid said at a Cairo news conference today (3 August) that the resolution passed by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) summit in Kampala, aimed at putting greater pressure on Israel through the United Nations, was a complete success for the Arabs.
The resolution called on all OAU states to bring pressure on Israel at the United Nations, including the possibility of eventually depriving Israel of its U.N. membership.
To cement the new spirit of co-operation between African and Arab states, Mr. Riad is now looking ahead to an Arab conference to prepare the way for a proposed Arab-African summit meeting later this year or early next.
Coverage includes a lengthy statement by Mr. Riad on the OAU resolution concerning Israel.
