Gen. O.P. Malhotra, today took over as the new Chief of the Army Staff. As the new Chief wearing the uniform of a full General was recieved by senior army officers the third Kumaon Battalion presented his a guard of honour. He was then ushered into the South Block office in a procession formed by top military officials. He posed for photographers and later briefed the press.
Yesterday the Chief of the Army Staff Gen. T.N. Raina, retired from service was given a ceremonial send offat a colourful ceremony. On arrival Gen. Raina was recieved by Delhi are Commander. Later he inspected a guard of honour and bid farewell from senior officers. Earlier he paid a courtesy call to Defence Secretary.
Lieutenant-General O.P. Malhotra PVSM, Vice Chief of the Army Staff, has been appointed as the next Chief of the Army Staff. He will assume his new duties with effect from June 1, 1978.
Born in August, 1922, Lt. General Malhotra was commissioned in the Regiment of Artillery in November 1941. He commanded different artillery regiments between November 1950 and July 1961, besides being an instructor at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. He was the Military Attache at the Indian Embassy in Moscow for nearly three years from June 1962.
He commanded an artillery brigade form August 1965 to January 1966, when he took over as the Commander of a Mountain Brigade.
Promoted Major-General in September 1967, he commanded an Infantry Division for two years. He was posted as the Chief of the Staff of a Corps Headquarters in the Eastern Sector in September 1969, which appointment be held till May 1972, when he took over Corps in the Western Sector.
In 1974, General Malhotra was appointed GOC-in-C Southern Command. This appointment he held till January 1977, when he was appointed Vice-Chief of the Army Staff.
Lt. Gen. malhotra is the Senior Colonel Commandant of the Regiment of Artillery.
He was awarded Param Vishisht Seva Medal in 1977 for rendering distinguished service of the most exceptional order.
General T.N. Raina, MVC, present Chief of the Army Staff, will relinquish his appointment on May 31, 1978, on completion of his tenure.
