    THE PAINTING WAS PURCHASED BY MR DAVID MANN FOR THE BODLEY GALLERY. IT WAS SOLD ON BEHALF OF AN ANONYMOUS SWISS ART COLLECTOR.

    THE 'MOTHER AND CHILD' WAS PAINTED IN BARCELONA IN 1902. MR MANN SAID HE HAD BEEN PREPARED TO GO AS HIGH AS GBP220-THOUSAND STERLING IN THE BIDDING TO SECURE THE WORK.

    UNTIL TODAY THE RECORD PRICE PAID AT AUCTION FOR A PICASSO WAS ???0-THOUSAND STERLING, ALTHOUGH THE BAVARIAN STATE GOVERNMENT PAID GBP90-THOUSAND STERLING IN A PRIVATE PURCHASE OF A PICASSO IN 1964.

    BIDDING FOR THE PICTURE STARTED AT GBP20-THOUSAND STERLING. IT JUMPED RAPIDLY TO GBP115-THOUSAND STERLING, AND AFTER THAT ONLY MR MANN AND A BRITISH ART GALLERY COMPETED. THE PAINTING MEASURES 32 3/4 INCHES (83 C.M.) BY 23 1/3 INCHES (60 C.M.).

    ANOTHER PICASSO AUCTIONED TODAY, LES SOLES, PAINTED IN 1940, WAS SOLD FOR GBP15,500 STERLING. ALTOGETHER, THE SOTHEBY'S SALE TODAY REALISED MORE THAN GBP1-MILLION STERLING, INCLUDING A CEZANNE WATER COLOUR WHICH WENT TO AN AMERICAN DEALER FOR GBP145-THOUSAND STERLING. A RECORD FOR A WATER-COLOUR.
