  • Description

In the Lebanon, three Senegalese soldiers of the United Nations interim force, were killed and one wounded on Monday (1 May) when their jeep ran over a mine near the village of Bazouriyeh, east of the southern port of Tyre.

SYNOPSIS: Israeli tanks which spearheaded the March advance into the South Lebanon are gradually withdrawing along with other Israeli troops as troops of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon, Unifil, take their place. The latest contingent to arrive are 650 troops from the African nations of Senegal.

It was three newly arrived Senegalese troops who were killed when their jeep hit a mine in the outskirts of Bazouriyeh near Tyre. A fourth man was injured. The incident follows the deaths, on Sunday night (30 April), of two Lebanese leftists in a clash with French Unifil troops on patrol about four miles (six kilometres) north east of Tyre. Reuters new agency reports the fighting flared when the Unifil troops tried to prevent a group of armed leftists crossing into territory still occupied by Israeli troops.

It was the latest incident which the men of Unifil, under the supervision of General Emmanuel Erskine, have had to contend with since they started to move into the areas occupied by Israel in their March invasion.

In the village of Abbasieh, General Erskine took part in a handover ceremony as the UN flag was raised and Israeli troops moved out. Unifil forces are still 1,000 short of the total called for by the Security Council but as Israeli troops have now pulled back to the line set as the original objective in the invasion, Unifil now police two thirds of the war zone. On Monday, Israel's defence Minister Ezer Weizman said Israel would withdraw completely, but gave no deadline.
