  • Description

General Rafik Aref, a former deputy Premier of Iraq and Chief of Staff of the Army, was sentenced to death by hanging on November 10 by a military court for plotting against the Syrian regime. Several days before the trial in Baghdad, Selim Fawkry, Director General of Information and Broadcasting in the revolutionary Iraqi Government, was interviewed by Visnews on Aref and Iraq.

The first question asked was, "Has the present Government made any specific plans for a future plebiscite to be held in Iraq?"
Then, turning to the Aref case, Fawkry was asked whether the Iraqi Government was forewarned, directly or indirectly, of General Aref's intention to desert his post as Iraqi Ambassador to Western Germany and return to Iraq.

Regarding the charges to be preferred against Aref, Selim Fawkry said....
"Will a trial take place and when?"
"On what counts will he be tried?"
