Background: A fight between spectators, officials and boxers ended the European Heavyweight title fight between holder Dick Richardson and former European Champion Brian London, at Porthcawl, Wales, and Aug 29. Trouble started when referee Andrew Smyth stopped the match after the eighth round due to London's badly cut left eye. He awarded the fight to Richardson, whereupon London dashed across the ring and attacked his victor.
Richardson's trainer was knocked to the floor by London, spectators swarmed into the ring and the battle began. It took 20 policemen to control the two rivals and their supporters. When the referee stopped the fight London held a considerable points lead.
At the start of the event it was London who set the pace. Despite his shorter reach he carried the fight to Richardson and for six rounds out-boxed the champion. Richardson was unable to cope with the jolting left hand of his shorter opponent. Several times the champion launched a two handed attacked but he was punched off. throughout the fight London used his solid left to throw Richardson off balance.
In the sixth round a cut appeared under London's eye and by the seventh the blood was flowing steadily down his face. Both fighters lost their tempers in the eighth. London shouted at Richardson to come in and fight and the two men clashed in the centre of the ring punching and mauling, with very few clean blows. After the bell the referee walked to London's corner then crossed the ring and held Richardson's hand in the air. Then the riot started.
