SYNOPSIS: Cairo's century-old Opera house was destroyed by fire on Thursday, despite attempts by firemen from all over the city to bring the blaze under control.

The Opera celebrated its centenary two years ago. It was built in 1869 to celebrate the opening of the Suez canal. Built mostly in timber and plaster in a late Italian renaissance style, the building had no chance as the fire spread. No immediate cause was known.

An investigation has been ordered to establish the cause. So far it has been blamed on a gas leak or a short circuit.

The elaborately decorated top floor and ceiling, rich with paintings of Verdi, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert, collapsed into the flames. A pall of smoke hung over Cairo.

Among the crowds who watched the fire were members of an opera company who had been rehearsing. The fire has robbed Cairo of one of its most precious historical relics.
