SYNOPSIS: Thousands of Dacca residents took to the streets on Wednesday to ;attend a rally in honour of Mujib Day. The rally was organised by the students' wing of the Awami League--of which Sheikh Mujib is the leader. Flags of the self-styled Bangladesh nation were in evidence.... as were posters of the Est Pakistani leader--Sheikh Mujibar Rahman.
Among the speakers was a student leader. Nure Alam Siddiqui, President of the Bangladesh Students League. He and his colleagues called for the immediate release of Sheikh Mujib, who's currently under house arrest in West Pakistan. They said that hi continued detention threatened world peace. The meeting called upon all of what were called progressive countries to recognise Bangladesh. They said the new nation was an irreversible fact which couldn't be altered.
The rally was described as the fist of its kind in east Pakistan for about seven months. The student leaders condemned what they called the reactionary role of the United Nations in last month's Indo-Pakistan war. They also criticised the roles of the United States and the People's Republic of China in the recent conflict. The meeting appealed to all creative forces to cooperate in order to rebuild. The student leaders urged that people be on their guard against any re-establishment of bureaucracy. The speakers also touched upon the importance of the creation of an egalitarian social system and the eradication of illiteracy.
The students then returned to their important issue at hand and mentioned Indian and Bengali sacrifices. They said that the release of Sheikh Mujib must be secured at all costs...and they made solemn pledge to achieve it.
