  • Description

Jordan's spring and summer camel racing season drew large crowds of spectators - and punters - to Amman's Royal Racing Club.

Camel racing is one of Jordan's most popular sports. Before the 1967 war the club used to hold their camel race during the winter season at the Dead sea, below the level of the Mediterranean sea level.

Most camels are primarily beasts of burden fames for their endurance over long distances rather than their speed. But most of the racing camel are the descendants of Bedouin war camels and the breading has been so specialised that the riffing and racing camels form a type quite distinct from the common baggage animal.

Camel racing also takes place in many other countries including Niger, Nigeria, Dubai, Oman and the United States.

The annual camel race in the Untied States takes place in Virginia City, Nevada. The camels are descendants of camels introduced to America from Asia in the 1850's by the U.S. Army as beasts of burden for frontier garrisons in the southwest.

In Sunday's rather more serious competitions in Amman the Camel Racing Cup went to Colonel Na'el Majali assistant Commander of Jordan's Desert Patrol Regiment.
