Background: In a colourful ceremony Sultan Tuanku Yahaya Putra Ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Ibrahim, was formally installed as the new King of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. (28 February).
The 59-year-old Sultan was installed according to a tradition dating back to the 14th Century Kingdom of Malacca. He took office for a five year term after being chosen as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Elected King) by the hereditary rulers of the nine constituent states in western Malaysia.
They exercised their prerogative under the Malaysian Constitution to elect the Head of State from among themselves.
The installation ceremony was witnessed by state rulers, the heads of diplomatic missions and members of the federal government -- led by the Prime Minister, Datuk Hussein On.
The Prime Minister, said that the King's accession to the throne was a democratic process under Malaysia's constitutional monarchy which was unique in the modern world.
The Prime Minister also pledged that the government would continue to promote regional co-operation and work for the implementation of a zone of peace, freedom and neutrality in South East Asia.
