  • Description

SOME 350 DEMONSTRATORS PROTESTING AGAINST BRITISH MILITARY ACTION IN ANGUILLA TODAY (SUNDAY) MARCHED FROM LONDON'S SPEAKERS' CORNER IN HYDE PARK TO NUMBER 10 DOWNING STREET TO DELIVER A LETTER OF PROTEST TO THE PRIME MINISTER. THE MARCHERS, WHO WERE LED BY MEMBERS OF THE "BLACK PANTHER MOVEMENT", WERE, ON THE WHOLE PEACEFUL AND ORDERLY - AND ONLY MINOR SCUFFLES BROKE OUT AS THEY GATHERED IN WHITEHALL AT THE ENTRANCE TO DOWNING STREET.

AS THE MARCHERS REACHED DOWNING STREET, POLICE HELD BACK THE BULK OF THE DEMONSTRATION, AND SCUFFLES BROKE OUT BEFORE A DELEGATION OF FOUR WOMEN WAS ALLOWED THROUGH TO THE ENTRANCE OF NO.10 TO DELIVER THEIR LETTER OF PROTEST TO THE PRIME MINISTER.

THE DEMONSTRATION COMES ON THE DAY AFTER THE FIRST SERIOUS PUBLIC REACTION TO TAKE PLACE IN ANGUILLA ITSELF SINCE LAST WEDNESDAY'S (MARCH 19) OCCUPATION OF THE ISLAND BY BRITISH PARATROOPERS AND POLICEMEN, AND ON A DAY IN WHICH THE BRITISH SUNDAY PRESS GAVE WIDE EDITORIAL COVERAGE TO THE SITUATION. THE COMMENTS RANGED FROM JUSTIFICATION FOR THE BRITISH ACTION BY PEREGRINE WORSTHORNE IN THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH TO A SCATHING SUNDAY TIMES ARTICLE THAT WAS HEADLINED "BRUTE FARCE AND IGNORANCE."
