    A SARAWAK TRACKER WHO WAS AWARDED THE GEORGE CROSS FOR GALLANTRY DURING THE MALAYAN EMERGENCY HAS REJOINED THE ARMY TO HELP DEFEND MALAYSIA. HE IS AWANG ANAK RAWANG, 35, WHO WAS AMONG 132 RECRUITS FOR THE 1ST BATALLION MALAYSIAN RANGERS WHO ARRIVED IN SINGAPORE ON MARCH 7.

    THE RECRUITS LEFT SINGAPORE BY BUS TO BEGIN TRAINING IN SUNGEI PATANI, NORTHERN MALAYA.

    AWANG WAS AWARDED THE GEORGE CROSS IN 1950 WHEN HE WAS WORKING WITH THE 1ST BATALLION WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT AS A TRACKER.

    A GROUP OF BRITISH SOLDIERS WITH WHOM HE WAS WORKING WERE AMBUSHED AND, DESPITE THE FACT THAT HE HIMSELF WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED, AWANG DISPLAYED MAGNIFICENT COURAGE IN BEATING OFF THE ATTACKERS.
