COMMENTATOR .... other bitter years when EOKA murdered their way towards what they claimed would be freedom for cyprus. Men like 29-year-old Nicos Sampson who was boasted that he's killed someone for every year of his life. During the emergency he was accused of murdering a British sergeant but acquitted. Later he was sentenced to death carrying firearms, but the sentence was commuted. Today Sampson owns the island's biggest daily circulation paper, Mahi, and I called at eh paper's well-equipped offices to talk to him. You yourself Mr Sampson are now a very prosperous newspaper proprietor and it has been said of you that you're perhaps the most powerful man in this island. Is it true?

SAMPSON. I have my newspaper and my newspaper has the biggest circulation in the island.

COMMENTATOR. You also great political influence ahev you not - you have influence with the President.

SAMPSON. I am friendly with the president and I'm never against him. My newspaper is for the government.

COMMENTATOR. How many supporters would you say you had - let me put it this way - were you yourself ever to run for president.

SAMPSON. Never will I run for president.

COMMENTATOR. Have you seen anything of General Grivas recently, the other EOKA leader?

SAMPSON. I saw him two months ago. I was in Greece and I made a social visit.

COMMENTATOR. Do you think he is likely to return to the island?

    SAMPSON. I don't believe it.

    COMMENTATOR. Why not.

SAMPSON. From what I read in the newspapers he wants to stay in Greece and write his memoirs, finish off his books - he's an old man don't forget.

COMMENTATOR. The British government is now trying to keep the peace in Cyprus - do you accept this.

SAMPSON. We welcomed them in the first place, when they came here - the British forces-peaceful forces to help the government to restore order and peace, but unfortunately we have a lot of examples that they were not fair - they were for Turkish elements. Another example - they give arms to the Turks, they help them.

COMMENTATOR. I would suggest you have no proof of this

SAMPSON. We have a lot of proof - don't forget that Denktash's mail was discovered in a regimental mail sack.

COMMENTATOR. Is it not true that the Greek Cypriots are getting a lot of arms in.

SAMPSON. Our Government had to buy arms to restore order and peace.

COMMENTATOR. This is what the Turks say too - you don't accept their point of view.

SAMPSON. But we have said because they are rebels they have no right to buy guns - they rise up against the government of the people.

COMMENTATOR. If this is so then is the killing of Turks justified as you said the killing of Britains was.

SAMPSON. But the Turks are killing us, the Greeks, not the Greeks that are killing the Turks.

COMMENTATOR. Is this always the case.

SAMPSON. Always they start the shooting. Definitely they start shooting in Kazaphani, they shot a policeman who was patrolling without any reason.

COMMENTATOR. It was in some doubt as to whether they started it or the Greeks started it. I was there and it was very difficult to find out in fact who fired the first shot.

SAMPSON. You were not there from the beginning - I know that you were in the General Hospital in that period - you learned the story from the General Hospital - so you were not present from the beginning.

COMMENTATOR. I was there while the investigation...... end of interview.

Investigations in fact go on every day to find out who starts the shooting. The Tur's it seems nearly always fir first, but.
