THE PREMIER OF PORTUGAL, DR. MARCELLNO CAETANO, ARRIVED IN BISSAU, GUINEA, ON MONDAY (APRIL 14) ON THE FIRST LEG OF A WEEK-LONG OFFICIAL VISIT TO THE PORTUGUESE EAST AFRICAN TERRITORIES - THE FIRST SUCH TRIP EVER UNDERTAKEN BY A PORTUGUESE HEAD OF STATE.

DR. CAETANO, WHO ANNOUNCED THAT HE WOULD MAKE THIS TRIP ON TAKING OFFICE LAST SEPTEMBER, WAS GREETED BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE PROVINCE OF GUINEA AND OTHER OFFICIALS AND MILITARY LEADERS. THE PREMIER HAS SHOWN GREAT INTEREST IN THE PROBLEMS OF PORTUGUESE AFRICA SINCE HIS DAYS AS FOREIGN MINISTER, AND THE CURRENT VISIT, WHICH ALSO INCLUDES ANGOLA AND MOZAMBIQUE, IS CONSIDERED AN IMPORTANT POLITICAL MOVE FOR PORTUGAL AND VITAL TO THE FUTURE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA.

ALL ALONG THE 5-MILE (8-KILOMETRE) DRIVE FROM THE AIRPORT TO THE CITY CENTRE, DR. CAETANO WAS CHEERED BY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE REPRESENTING THE FORTY ETHNIC GROUPS OF THE PROVINCE. ONE OF THE FIRST STOPS WAS A VISIT TO THE CATHEDRAL OF BISSAU, WHERE DR. CAETANO STOPPED TO CHAT WITH VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE CROWD.

IN SPEECHES THROUGHOUT HIS TRIP, DR. CAETANO HAS STRESSED HIS SUPPORT OF THE PROVINCES AND CALLED OF PEACE IN THE WARS AGAINST AFRICAN GUERRILLAS, REAFFIRMING HIS DETERMINATION TO HOLD ON THE TERRITORIES IN ORDER TO ENSURE THEIR PROSPERITY WITHIN A MULTI-RACIAL SOCIETY.

DR. CAETANO RETURNS TO LISBON ON MONDAY (APRIL 21).
