At St. Paul's Cathedral, October 15, bishops and clergy representing 17 foreign churches in Britain?

  • Description

At St. Paul's Cathedral, October 15, bishops and clergy representing 17 foreign churches in Britain were among those who attended the service celebrating the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Save the Children Fund.

The foreign church representatives included the Rev. F. Dubois (French Reformed), the Rev. Dr. R.H. van Apeldoorn (Dutch Reformed), the Rev. C.Reverdin (Swiss Reformed), the Right Rev. Anthony, Bishop of Sergievo (Russian Orthodox) and the Right Rev. James Vivoos, Bishop of Apameia (Greek Orthodox). The Swiss Ambassador was one of the Diplomatic Corps representatives attending.

Since 1919 the S.C.F. has worked in 50 different countries, including Russia, where some 650,000 people were fed daily during the Volga famine of 1921. The anniversary service was one of the rare occasions when clergy of so many nationalities have been gathered together in the Cathedral.

At the end of the service, which was also attended by the Fund's President, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, and its Chairman, Sir John Troutbeck, the blessing was said by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
