  • Description

President omar Bongo of Gabon arrived in Brazzaville recently for a brief visit during which he held talks with the Congo's new Head of State, Colonel Denis Sassou-Nguesso. It was the first meeting of the two leaders and follows months of political instability in the Congo during which several government changes have been made. The former President, General Joachim Yhombi-Opango was arrested earlier this year and charged with high treason for alleged deviationism. He also faces charges of corruption, and is alleged to have robbed the state of more than tow billion CFA francs (nine million U.S. dollars) during the past two years.

SYNOPSIS: President Bongo arrived at Brazzaville's Maya-Maya airport on Tuesday (23 May). He was returning home from the Franco-African summit in Kigali, Rwanda, and took the opportunity for a brief stop-over to exchange views with Colonel Denis Sassou, who was elected Head of State in March.

After inspecting the customary guard of honour, President Bongo, accompanied by his Foreign Minister Martin Bongo, and his personal adviser, Jean-Francois Ntoutoume was introduced to a host of Congolese officials.

Among these were many new members of the central committee of the Congolese worker's Party--the country's only political party. Since taking over from his discredited successor General Yhombi-Opango, colonel Sassou-Nguesso has pursued a purge of what the has called opportunists and irresponsible elements operating within the party.
