  • Description

MARGARET SMITH OF AUSTRALIA AND MARIA BUENO OF BRAZIL, WHO HAVE BOTH WORN THE WIMBLEDON CROWN, WILL CLASH FOR THE WOMEN'S TITLE IN THE 1964 FRENCH TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

BY QUALIFYING TODAY (FRIDAY) TO MEET HERE ON SUNDAY, MISS SMITH AND MISS BUENO JUSTIFIED THE RATINGS OF THE FRENCH SEEDING COMMITTEE, WHO NOMINATED THEM NUMBER ONE AND TWO RESPECTIVELY.

IN BLISTERING HEAT, MISS SMITH -- CURRENT HOLDER OF THE WIMBLEDON, AUSTRALIAN AND ITALIAN TITLES -- WAS ON TOP FORM TO OVERCOME DETERMINED RESISTANCE FROM UNSEEDED HELGA SCHULTZE, OF WEST GERMANY. THE TALL 21-YEAR-OLD AUSTRALIAN WON 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, IN AN HOUR AND 35 MINUTES.

THE OTHER SEMI-FINAL WAS DULL BY COMPARISON. AT THE START MISS BUENO COULD NOT HARNESS HER TREMENDOUS POWER, AND MISS TURNER WENT AHEAD WITH DEEP DRIVING. ONCE MISS BUENO FOUND CONTROL AT THE NET, THE INITIATIVE QUICKLY PASSED TO HER. SHE WON 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.
