    THE LATEST ISRAELI ATTACK ON JORDAN ON WEDNESDAY (21 JANUARY) LEFT SEVEN ARABS DEAD AND 17 INJURED AFTER A 21 HOUR BATTLE IN THE GHOR SAFI AREA OF JORDAN SOUTH OF THE DEAD SEA. NO ISRAELI CASUALTIES WERE REPORTED.

    THE MECHANISED ISRAELI FORCE SUPPORTED BY AIR STRIKES DEMOLISHED SEVERAL HOUSES IN THE VILLAGES OF SAFI AND FIFA AND DESTROYED A NUMBER OF JORDANIAN VEHICLES. THEY SHELLED HILLTOPS AND THE MAIN ROAD LINKING THE REGION TO KARAK, ABOUT 18 MILES (30 KMS) TO THE NORTHEAST.

    THE RAID, WAS IN RETALIATION FOR ARAB COMMANDO ROCKET ATTACKS ON ISRAELI POTASH WORKS ACROSS THE CEASEFIRE LINES. IT WAS BELIEVED TO BE ONE OF THE LONGEST SORTIES SINCE THE SIX DAY WAR IN 1967.

    JORDANIAN STATEMENTS SAID JORDANIAN FORCES REPELLED THE ATTACK BUT THE PALESTINIAN ARMED STRUGGLE COMMAND (PASC) WHICH LINKS GUERRILLA GROUPS, CREDITED FATAH COMMANDOS AND SAUDI TROOPS STATIONED IN THE AREA. A MILITARY STATEMENT FROM TEL AVIV SAID THE ISRAELI FORCE PULLED BACK AFTER COMPLETION OF THE SWEEP.
