  • Description

Chancellor Bruno Kreisky of Austria met on Wednesday (3 October 1973) for an hour with Egyptian Tourism Minister Ismail Fahmy. The visitor was bearing a special message from President Anwar Sadat, expressing "warm appreciation" for Austria's announced intention to close the Schoenau transit camp for Soviet Jews on their way to Israel.

Dr Kreisky offered to shut down the facility after Arab guerrillas threatened to kill four Jewish hostages at Vienna Airport last Friday (28 September 1973). He has since rejected a personal appeal from Israeli Premier Mrs Golda Meir to rescind his decision. But no date has yet been given for the final closure of Schoenau, and Soviet emigrants are continuing to be processed there.

Mr Fahmi, who was chosen to convey President Sadat's thanks, was Egyptian Ambassador to Austria until last year.
