  • Description

Mauritania has been given about S?289,000 ($500,000 U.S.) by Saudi Arabia to equip a new national teacher training college. The gift coincided with the visit to the northwest African republic of the Saudi Arabian Finance Minister, Sheikh Mohammed Abou El Khail.

SYNOPSIS: The Saudi finance minister arrived in the capital of Nouakchott on Saturday (30 July) where he was greeted by his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohammed Ould Badah.

Sheikh Khail did not present the gift himself, but the Saudi embassy in Nouakchott announced it the next day. Sheikh Khail said the purpose of his visit was to study ways of reinforcing the economic ties between the two countries -- ties which were already very strong and which these visits could only reinforce to their mutual advantage.

Sheikh Khail also held talks with the Mauritanian President Moktar Ould Daddah. Before his visit to Nouakchott, the Saudi minister saw King Hassan of Morocco and signed an agreement providing finance for irrigation work and a new port. Among the oil-rich Arab nations, the Saudis are by far the latest providers of financial assistance to other Moslem nations.
