Background: Donington Park in Derby, the famous road racing circuit of the 1930's is being restored at a cost of ??? million (2 1/2 million US. dollars).
Its owners aim to stage a full international grand prix on the track by the and of the decade.
The track was the first road racing circuit in England, and from 19???1 to 1939 became the home of British road racing enthusiasts.
In 1931 the secretary of the Derby and District Motor Club, Fored Craner approached the then owner of the land in an effort to open a road racing circuit on the private grounds of the estate.
Granor ran a series of successful motorcycle meetings on the picturesque course and during the winter of 1932-33 spent GBP12,000 (24,000 U.S. dollars) on developing the circuit for car racing.
Donington Park progressed from strength to strength. In 1937 it was the site of the RAC Tourist Trophy and in October of that year the Grand Prix in which British race-goers saw for the first time the 176 m.p.h. (280 k.p.h.) supercharged Mercedes-Benz and Auto Unions, the most powerful grand prix cars ever. After the war the Formula system was introduced, superchargers were banned and the pro-war Auto Unions became illegal.
An Auto Union driven by Bernd Rosemeyer won the race in 1937. The film shows the race the following year which was won by the legendary Italian Tazio Nuvolari, again in an Auto Union.
During the war the circuit was requisitioned by the War Office and it was not Until 1956 that the military moved out.
Leicester builder, Mr. Barnard "Tom" Wheatcroft bought the circuit section of the park in 1971, and started work on the track the following year.
Early this year major objections to the extensions were declared invalid by a Department of Environment inquiry and the work was given the go-ahead.
In 1973 Mr. Wheatcroft set up the Donington Collection of single seat racing cars. With eighty exhibits, it is the largest collection of racing cars in the world, and now Mr. Wheatcroft hopes that Donington Park Will have a future as well as a past.
