    FIVE PEOPLE WERE KILLED AND 200 INJURED ON SATURDAY (APRIL 1) WHEN AS SPEEDING EXPRESS TRAIN SMASHED INTO A LORRY ON A LEVEL CROSSING NEAR OSAKA, JAPAN.

    ALL THOSE KILLED -- THEY INCLUDED A GIRL OF SEVEN -- WERE IN THE FIRST TWO CARRIAGES OF THE FIVE-COACH TRAIN. THEY CRASHED ON TOP OF EACH OTHER ON A RIVER BANK ABOUT 30 FEET (NINE METRES) BELOW. THE THIRD COACH WAS LEFT HANGING ABOVE THE RIVER.

    THE STATIONARY LORRY WAS DRAGGED ALMOST 150 FEET (50 METRES) BEFORE THE TRAIN LEFT THE TRACK. THE ACCIDENT OCCURRED AT SENNANCHO, FIVE MILES (EIGHT KMS) SOUTH OF OSAKA, THE SECOND LARGEST CITY IN JAPAN.

    MANY OF THE PASSENGERS WERE TRAVELLING FROM OSAKA TO THEIR HOME IN WAYAKAMA CITY.

    THE TRUCK DRIVER AND ANOTHER MAN LEAPT FROM THE TRUCK WHEN IT STALLED ON THE CROSSING. THE DRIVER ATTEMPTED TO FLAG DOWN THE TRAIN, BUT IT COULD NOT SLOW DOWN IN TIME TO STOP. SOME 500 RESCUE WORKERS WERE GIVEN THE TASK OF CLEARING THE WRECKAGE AND TAKING THE INJURED TO HOSPITAL.
