Background: Chris Evert of the United States playing her opening match at Wimbledon on Wednesday (28 June) produced what was called "ruthless" tennis and beat Helena Anliot of Sweden 6-1, 6-0 in just 40 minutes. Jimmy Connors also of the United States followed her on the Centre Court to play Kim Warwick of Australia and beat him 6-3, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4.

SYNOPSIS: Bidding to regain the Wimbledon crown, Chris Evert, who was champion in 1974 and 1976, played almost faultlessly against Helena Anliot. She said that she had regained her appetite for the game after a four month lay-off earlier in the year. Evert serves in the second set and scores a point, 40-30.

Miss Evert's ground strokes -- precise and powerful -- are the strong point of her game, but she displayed a far wider range of strokes against Miss Anliot and played some deft drop shots. 21 year old Helena Anliot managed to salvage four games in losing to Chris Evert in the U.S. championships last year. At Wimbledon she showed herself as a competent player, reserving her strongest resistance until the last game of the match. Here's Miss Evert serving for match point and winning.

In the Warwick-Connors match, Warwick served from the far end and in his dive to return the ball, stumbled and fell, Connors moved in to score.

Jimmy Connors, the second men's seed, played a demanding game against Australia's Kim Warwick. He overcame a lapse of concentration in the third set, served and scored in an overhead shot.

The fourth set with Connors leading 5-4.

Warwick serving at match point, Connors returned the ball to win. Connors said that if he played as well for the rest of the tournament he would be satisfied.
