  • Description

TODAY (THURSDAY) HAS BEEN THE WORST IN THE CYPRUS TROUBLES SINCE THE CHRISTMAS FLARE-UP. ELEVEN PEOPLE WERE KILLED IN A BATTLE BETWEEN GREEK AND TURKISH CYPRIOTS AT A VILLAGE JUST OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL, NICOSIA. THE UNEASY PEACE WAS RESTORED BY BRITISH TROOPS, BUT THE SITUATION THROUGHOUT THE ISLAND IS STILL AT BOILING POINT. URGENT CONSULTATIONS HAVE AGAIN BEEN TAKING PLACE IN THE CAPITALS CONCERNED, ON THE MAKE-UP OF THE PROPOSED INTERNATIONAL PEACE KEEPING THE FORCE. A BRITISH SPOKESMAN SAID THAT WHEN ARRANGEMENTS HAVE BEEN WORKED OUT A REPORT WOULD BE MADE TO THE SECURITY COUNCIL, WHICH MIGHT BE FOLLOWED BY A DEBATE. MEANWHILE EVACUATION OF AMERICAN WOMEN AND CHILDREN FROM CYPRUS, FOLLOWING THE BOMBING OF THE U.S. EMBASSY, HAS COME TO A HALT.

IN ATHENS DEMONSTRATORS, LED BY ORTHODOX PRIESTS, MARCHED ON THE BRITISH AND AMERICAN EMBASSIES, CARRYING PLACARDS WITH SLOGANS SUCH AS "BRITISH KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF CYPRUS", "RECOURSE TO UNO". "INDEPENDENCE" AND "JOIN THE VOLUNTEER CORPS". BOTH EMBASSIES WERE SURROUNDED BY STRONG POLICE GUARDS.

ALTOGETHER 575 AMERICANS WERE TAKEN IN CHARTER PLANES FROM NICOSIA TO BEIRUT. MOST CARRIED ONLY ONE OR TWO SUITCASES. THEY ARE DEPENDANTS OF AMERICANS WORKING ON AID PROGRAMMES, IN THE EMBASSY AND THE TWO AMERICAN RADIO MONITORING STATIONS. TODAY (THURSDAY) THE EVACUATION CAME TO HALT. AN OFFICIAL SAID: "NOBODY WANTS TO LEAVE TODAY, BUT WE EXPECT SOME MORE WILL BE GOING TOMORROW."
U THANT HAS CUT SHORT HIS TOUR OF 10 AFRICAN STATES, WITH ONLY MOROCCO, ALGERIA AND TUNISIA VISITED. HE WAS DUE TO LEAVE FOR SENEGAL TOMORROW (FRIDAY). ON HIS WAY TO THE AIRPORT HE PAID A FAREWELL VISIT TO PRESIDENT BOURGUIBA. BEFORE LEAVING HE IS REPORTED TO HAVE SAID THAT THE SECURITY COUNCIL SHOULD TAKE UP THE CYPRUS ISSUE IF ASKED TO DO SO BY THE CYPRUS GOVERNMENT.
