Background: Storyline: the old town - by "cash h" of the west ban city of Nablus was placed under curfew again today, apparently after a demonstration by a couple of hundred school children. According to Israel radio, they set alight to several tyres in the narrow streets leading from the Casbah into the newer town, and hurled stones at security forces.
newsmen, who were prevented from entering the town at all yesterday, were not allowed to film today except under military supervision, after the curfew was imposed.
the demonstrations in Nablus - involving a hard core of around 80 schoolchildren and teenagers - have been going on all week. their main protest is against the imposition of value added tax in the week bank, However, according to some west bank experts, the demonstrations have been promoted by pro-Jordan elements trying to discredit the new mayor of Nablus, who is inclined to follow the PLO line. What is for sure that these demonstrations are on a minor scale, and nothing compared with the riots that swept many parts of the West Bank in spring and summer.
