  • Description

Architects, engineers, teachers and social scientists were among nearly a hundred delegates who attended the opening session of a seminar on educational facilities in Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday (7 March). Organised by the International Union of Architects, the seminar was to focus on self-reliance in educational facilities. UNESCO's Regional Bureau for Education in Africa sponsored the four-day programme.

SYNOPSIS: An exhibition illustrating discussion topics was held in conjunction with the seminar. Architectural models demonstrated the uses made of local materials and techniques for the construction of different educational buildings. Delegates at the seminar were to study the design techniques and logistics of self-reliance in educational facilities in preparation for the commission of a working group in that field. Special emphasis was to be given to the relationship between population, available resources, and national requirements for education.

    M. Bakary Kamian, director of UNESCO's Regional Bureau for Education in Africa, welcomed delegates to the opening session.

Delegates were to discuss ways of increasing awareness of the need for good educational facilities, methods of exchanging information and experience, and creation of a working paper for people working in the field.

Senegal's Secretary of Human Promotion, M. Ben Cisse, said the seminar would be important to developing countries.
