    SENEGAL'S MINISTER OF HEALTH, M. ABDOULAYE LY, PRESIDED AT THE OPENING SESSION OF THE SECOND AFRICAN CONFERENCE ON PSYCHIATRY IN DAKAR ON TUESDAY (5 MARCH).

    ORGANISED BY THE DAKAR SOCIETY OF PSYCHO-PATHOLOGY AND MENTAL HEALTH THE CONFERENCE IS UNDER THE JOINT CHAIRMANSHIP OF PROFESSOR T.A. COLOMB, HEAD OF THE NEUROPSYCHIATRY UNIT AT THE UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL OF FANN, AND PROFESSOR T.A. LAMBO, A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AT IBADAN, NIGERIA.

    ABOUT 250 PSYCHIATRISTS, PSYCHOLOGISTS AND SOCIOLOGISTS FROM AFRICA, EUROPE AND THE UNITED STATES ARE ATTENDING THE FOUR-DAY CONFERENCE WHICH IS AN EXTENSION OF THE FIRST SUCH CONFERENCE HELD IN NIGERIA IN 1961.

    SOME 25 REPORTS WILL BE PRESENTED DURING THE FIVE MAIN SESSIONS. THE SUBJECTS WILL INCLUDE SCHIZOPHRENIA IN AFRICA, THE USE OF INSTITUTIONAL THERAPY AND THE STRESSES OF RAPID SOCIAL CHANGE.

    RUNNING IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CONFERENCE IS AN ART EXHIBITION AND A SERIES OF SCIENTIFIC FILMS HIGHLIGHTING THE STUDY OF THE PSYCHOLOGY OF RACES AND PEOPLES.

    IN HIS OPENING ADDRESS M. LY URGED DELEGATES TO EXPLORE WHAT ASPECTS OF TRADITIONAL MEDICINE COULD USEFULLY BE TRANSLATED FOR INCLUSION IN THE TREATMENT OF THE MENTALLY SICK.
