  • Description

A huge fir at a chemical plant in the western Japanese city of Tokuyama which roared into life on Saturday (7 July) was still burning on Monday (9 July) morning.

Firefighters mounted a massive operation as flames leapt hundreds of yards (metres) into the sky. As dusk fell the roaring inferno lit the entire skyline of the city as it was framed by nearby buildings.

Crowds watched as the firemen battled to control the holocaust. The fire followed an explosion at the chemical plant. The fire officers fought through the night and all next day to subdue the flames and, although they managed to get it under control, it was still alight two days later.

The cause of the explosion and following blaze is bent investigated.
