  • Description

About 1,500 Tunisian troops left Tunis today (Wednesday) after being showered with flowers by enthusiastic crowds in the streets of the city. They left for the Libyan frontier, where they will await further orders.

Later Reuter quoted Tunisian sources as saying that Tunisia would agree to a ceasefire in the Middle East provided the parties in the conflict withdrew to their original positions.

The parading troops were told by President Habib Bourguiba that he was sure they would, in fighting to liberate Palestine, show the same spirit of sacrifice as they demonstrated during the battle for the liberation of Tunisia.

He added that the differences which divided the Arabs had disappeared and that they were all united in a common cause. Tunisia severed diplomatic relations with the United Arab Republic after a quarrel over policies towards Israel in October last year.

On Monday (5 June) thousands of Tunisians ransacked the British embassy, burning out the ground floor and also setting embassy cars afire.
