  • Description

French President Rene Coty inaugurated the fourth largest atomic accelerator in the world at the French centre of Nuclear Studies at Saclay, near Paris, on November 6.

In a speech commemorating the occasion the President said: "Today the Government understands the fundamental research is imperative and that it must be pursued rapidly and methodically."
After his speech, the President and several Cabinet members, who had accompanied him, toured the centre.

The President started the accelerator by pushing a button, and then he and his colleagues went to see it at closer range. No one will be allowed near the cyclotron while it is operating fully because of the dangerous amount of radioactivity around it.

Begun in 1954, the accelerator has been christened Saturn because its shapes suggests the ring round that planet. It has a diameter of 51 feet but it smaller than two accelerators in the United States and one in Russia.
