  • Description

After suffering Israeli shelling on Friday (May 22) the four Lebanese villages of Bint Jbeil, Aitaroun, Blida and Yaroun are licking their wounds and recovering from the attack. In Bint Jbeil, a small town of 17,000 people, most areas seemed deserted. Only demonstrators against the Israeli attacks enlivened the scene of wreckage.

The shelling which did the damage lasted four hours and was seen in the village as a retaliation for the Arab guerrilla attack against an Israeli school bus in Upper Galilee earlier in the day. The Israeli guns opened up about half an hour after the bus incident.

Next day (May 23) Lebanon rushed food, medical supplies and tents to the area to help the wounded and give shelter to those who lost their homes.

Official figures indicated that 20 people were killed, about 40 injured, and 150 houses either destroyed or damaged in the shellfire. A military spokesman said several women and children were among the dead.

A Lebanese note to the United Nations Security Council, published in Beirut on Saturday evening (May 23) described the artillery barrage as brutal, and held Israel responsible, by flouting U.N. resolutions and International Law, for the presence of Palestinians on Lebanese soil, and for their activities.
