  • Description

In Beirut yesterday (Friday), the trial of Frenchman Christian Belon -- accused of hijacking a Trans World Airlines (TWA) airliner in January -- opened with Belon pleading guilty before the trial was postponed until October 22nd pending psychiatric evidence on his mental state. Evidence was also heard from his mother, Audette Belon, who had come from Paris for the trial.

Twenty-year-old Belon admitted the charges of restricting the freedom of people, firing to terrorize and causing damage to property when he hijacked the airliner to Beirut during a Paris to ??? Tel Aviv flight -- and stated that he had done so because he was sympathetic to the Palestinian cause and wanted to exchange the 20 passengers and crew for Lebanese and commando prisoners held by the Israelis.

Following the hijack, Belon was detained briefly, then released on a 25 Lebanese pound bail (about 3 pounds sterling or 7 dollars), although originally hailed as something of a hero by certain Lebanese personalities, he was later detained again and committed for trial.

After the postponement, Mme. Belon spoke to lawyers and reporters in the Courthouse halls. Although the trail itself was held behind closed doors, cameramen were able to catch a glimpse through a window of the accused as he entered a police van under escort.
