The Ivory Coast Minister of Posts and Telegraphs, Mr. Souleymane Cissoko on Monday (11 October) laid the foundation stone of the country's first satellite ground station at Kakakro, a tourist resort east of Bingerville.
The ground station is an important part of the country's drive to make its international communications as good as anywhere in the world, by participation in the Intelsat International Telecommunications Consortium, whose communications satellites ring the globe.
Mr. Cissoko stressed at the ceremony that better international communications would make a vital contribution to the Ivory Coast's development.
SYNOPSIS: An important step for the Ivory Coast was taken at the town of kakakro, on Monday, when the foundation stone was laid for the country's first Satellite Ground Station. When it is in operation, the Ivory Coast's international communications by telephone, telegraph and telex will be as good as those in the more highly developed countries of the world.
Guest of honour at the opening, in a town best-known for tourism in the hills to the east of Bingerville, was the Minister of Posts and Telegraphs, Mr. Souleymane Cissoko. He was greeted by the local Sousprefect Mr. Alphonse Aka.
Mr. Cissoko explained why the ground station was important to the Ivory Coast, He said that economic development was based on the opening up of the country to trade with the rest of the world, and international communications by satellite were one way of achieving this.
After his speech, the Minister signed the foundation parchment which was to become part of the building. It was secreted in a metal container inside the foundation stone. The Ground Station will enable the Ivory Coast to participate fully in the Intelsat International Consortium, which has been responsible for developing a world-wide network of commercial telecommunications satellites, the latest of which is Intelsat 4, launched in January 1971 from Cape Kennedy. Intelsat 4 can simultaneously transmit up to 9000 telephone circuits or 12 colour television channels. the Ivory Coast's ground station will have a dish antenna of 30 meters diameter to receive signals in the Atlantic Ocean zone. The building of the station is a key part in the programme of INTELSCI, the agency responsible for International Communications in the Ivory Coast.
Its Director-General M. Kone Bangali, who explained the project at the ceremony, made lavish preparations for the occasion. He has a new road specially built to give easy access to the site.
