  • Description

ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY (TURKEY) HAD NEW OCCUPANTS YESTERDAY (1 JUNE) -- THE CITY'S POLICE.

POLICE AND GOVERNMENT SECURITY FORCES MOVED IN AFTER THE UNIVERSITY WAS CLOSED INDEFINITELY BY ITS GOVERNING BODY.

THE OCCUPATION WAS THE LATEST EPISODE IN TURKEY'S GROWING STUDENT REVOLT.

THIS NEW WAVE OF PROTEST BEGAN WHEN THE TURKISH GOVERNMENT FAILED TO PRESS A UNIVERSITY REFORM BILL THROUGH PARLIAMENT. AS THE REFORM DISPUTE DRAGGED ON, TWO DEANS AND THREE SENATE MEMBERS OF ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY, AND THE RECTOR AND ELEVEN DEANS AT ANKARA UNIVERSITY, RESIGNED.

THEN, OVERNIGHT ON MAY 31, THE STUDENTS OCCUPIED ISTANBUL UNIVERSITY BUILDINGS. THE UNIVERSITY SENATE MET AND DECIDED TO CLOSE THE UNIVERSITY AND CALL IN THE SECURITY FORCES 'TO PROTECT BUILDINGS'. AFTER THIS ANNOUNCEMENT, ANGRY STUDENTS CALLED ON THE RECTOR TO RESIGN, AND STONED HIS CAR AS HE LEFT THE CAMPUS.

YESTERDAY, HOWEVER, THE STUDENTS LEFT THE BUILDINGS WITHOUT INCIDENT, AND THE POLICE TOOK OVER. OFFICIALS SAID LATER THAT LARGE QUANTITIES OF PETROL BOMBS, STICKS AND STONES HAD BEEN FOUND IN A SEARCH OF THE PREMISES.

NOW SECURITY FORCES PATROL THE CAMPUS, AND UNIVERSITY GATES ARE CLOSED AND SECURED WITH WIRE. BUT THE TENSION REMAINS.
