    MIDNIGHT HAD BEEN THE PILOTS' DEADLINE FOR A SETTLEMENT OF THEIR PAY CLAIM, BUT IT PASSED WITH LEADERS OF THE BRITISH AIRLINE PILOTS' ASSOCIATION (BALPA) STILL TALKING WITH THE MINISTER OF EMPLOYMENT AND PRODUCTIVITY, MRS BARBARA CASTLE
    WHEN THE TALKS FINALLY BROKE DOWN, THE BALPA CHAIRMAN, CAPTAIN ROY MERRIFIELD, TOLD NEWSMAN THAT THE STRIKE WAS DEFINITE. ABOUT 1,000 PILOTS ARE AFFECTED AND THE STRIKE NOTICE REFERRED ONLY TO LONDON'S HEATHROW AND GATWICK AIRPORT. BOAC WERE HOPING TO OPERATE FLIGHTS FROM MANCHESTER AND PRESTWICK.

    THE FIRST AIRCRAFT LIKELY TO BE AFFECTED OUT OF LONDON WAS A NEW YORK-BOUND FLIGHT DUE TO LEAVE AT 1000 BRITISH STANDARD TIME.

    PASSENGERS ON THIS AND OTHER FLIGHTS HAD BEEN DOUBLE-BOOKED BY BOAC WITH OTHER AIRLINES.

    THE PILOTS EARN UP TO GBP5,800 A YEAR STERLING, AND IN SOME CASES THE INCREASES THEY ARE SEEKING WOULD AMOUNT TO 100 PER CENT.
